Making your net work for you
If gossip is good for you in the workplace, it's even better outside, where it goes by the name of networking. Being able to network is one of the most important, but lesser appreciated skills in the Personal Assistant's armoury. It's not only crucial for developing connections and knowledge that can help you in your current role, but can be invaluable in helping you find your next step up the ladder.Networking can take a variety of forms, from instigating a quick conversation with a contact's own PA when arranging meetings, to attending fully-fledged networking events. Essentially it means making and maintaining contact with someone who you are on common ground with professionally.
Building up your network can open a directory's worth of recommended businesses and be exceptionally useful when your boss throws that last minute curve-ball at you. Gabrielle Drake, Director of Crone Corkill, commented; ‘Every PA knows that feeling when your boss asks you to make arrangements in an unknown arena, such as providing a recommendation for a top-flight restaurant in a city you don't know. The internet can take you so far, but a personal recommendation from a fellow PA removes the element of guesswork which normally infiltrates these decisions, ensuring your boss has a wonderful experience and you get full brownie points.'
When you start looking around for your next job, a strong network really comes into its own. In recognition of the importance of the role, many bosses will begin their search by asking for personal recommendations from their colleagues, who in turn will speak to their own, trusted, PA. This not only ensures you hear about the widest possible variety of opportunities but also means you've been well-represented even before going for interview.
Gabrielle had this to say ‘Networking is a fantastic personal and professional skill with potentially far-reaching results. The key thing to remember is that it is also a two-way street and the more you put into supporting your network, the more they will be able to help you when required.'
